If you’ve just got yourself a new internet router, one of the first things you can do, is to set up Wi-Fi on it. This way, you and your household members can wirelessly access the internet and browse their favorite websites. Read on to learn how you can do this on any router.
How to Set Up Wi-Fi on an Internet Router
The first step in setting up Wi-Fi on your router is accessing the router’s admin panel. The router’s admin panel offers all the settings related to your router, including Wi-Fi settings.
Connect your router to your PC with a LAN cable. Open your browser, type 192. 168. 1. 1 in the address bar, and press Enter. This is the address to your router’s admin panel. Enter the credentials to access the admin panel. Usually, the default username and password are both admin. Check the manual if this isn’t the case for your router.
Now that you have access to the admin panel, it’s time to set up Wi-Fi through the wireless settings. The first thing you need to set up is your Wi-Fi’s SSID or Service Set Identification.
Inside the router’s admin panel, go to the Advanced tab. From there, click on Wireless and then go to Advanced Settings. Scroll down to SSID Settings. Check the Enable Wireless checkbox. Type in the SSID for your Wi-Fi. This will be the name you see when you connect to your router’s Wi-Fi. Set the Visibility Status to Visible. This will make your router’s Wi-Fi discoverable when you scan for nearby Wi-Fi connections on your devices. Scroll down to the bottom of the page and click Apply.
Now that you have the SSID set up, add some security. Adding security ensures that no one will access your router through Wi-Fi without your permission.
From Wireless Settings, go to Security Settings. Scroll down to Wireless Security Mode. Here you have to select the Wi-Fi security protocol. The most convenient security protocol is WPA. Select WPA from the menu. Finally, enter the passphrase for your Wi-Fi. When you connect to your router’s Wi-Fi with your devices, this will be the Wi-Fi password. Scroll to the bottom of the page and click Apply/Save.
That’s it! You now have a Wi-Fi network setup for your router. If the Wi-Fi network doesn’t show up on your device, give your router a reboot. If you want to hide your Wi-Fi network deliberately, then read our article on how to hide your Wi-Fi network.
